Stone Sierras of Weston Beach
Point Lobos State Park
I spend a lot of time on coastlines looking for grand scenes, but sometimes the most compelling landscapes are right at your feet. I was walking along Weston Beach on a cool, overcast day, the air thick with the smell of salt and damp stone. I almost passed this by, but the sharp, geometric lines in the rock caught my eye. When I looked straight down, the scene transformed. It wasn't just cracked rock anymore; it was a miniature mountain range, complete with jagged peaks, dark valleys carved from sediment, and foothills made of fine gravel. The scale was completely illusory. I spent a good while just crouched there, framing this tiny, epic world that the tide had revealed.
