Stone Strike

Capitol Reef National Park

You find the most interesting things when you slow down. I was deep in a narrow canyon in Capitol Reef, and the air was cool and still. It was pretty dark, and my eyes were just getting used to the low light when I saw this. It was like a lightning bolt had been branded into the rock. The rest of the wall was dark and covered in this rough, spotty lichen, but this one crack was perfectly clean, almost glowing with this warm, sandy color. It was such a stark contrast, this sliver of raw stone against the aged surface. I spent a good while just looking at it, this little moment of geological art hidden away from everything.
